Wednesday 18th March:Jewellery Museum Pforzheim

Jewellery Museum Pforzheim

What a great visit. This museum covers a lovely range of jewellery and body adornments. We are taken back to ancient artifacts, through to contemporary examples.
The ethnic room had the biggest impact on me, there was a mix of adornments that were both for men and woman and often you had to check for whom the piece was for. This room was my favorite  because of the stories that went along with some of the pieces.
One story that I found most interesting was for a beaded neckpiece. It was made of beads and was to be worn by a female when the time to be married came. The strings of beads on the piece are given to the girl every year from males. That is all that the information card said but I want to know more. Does she receive them because she is desired? Is there a bead-giving event every year? How is this bead giving determined? Are more desirable young woman given more beads? Do the amount of beads differ between young woman? I thought that was interesting. I guess I kind of likened it to a bit like getting likes on Facebook or Instagram (that was a joke… but maybe it wasn’t).
Often jewellery is something that signifies meaning. Either of an event or of feelings and it is a holder of memories.

Being in this museum also reminds me that as humans we seem to have an innate desire to decorate ourselves. Ancient civilizations, primitive tribes and first world inhabitants enjoy the decoration of our bodies for one reason or another and in one-way or another.
