Amongst the many galleries we visited today Nicole Schuster's exhibition at the Almstadt schmuck gallery continued to claw its way to the front of my mind. I was, personally, struck quite instantly with images and visual themes relatable to Shaun Tan's The Lost Thing.
The Lost Thing, Shaun Tan, 2000
Various, Nicole Schuster, 2011-2012
The pieces struck me as growing urban pods; futuristic fauna developing in a constructed world. The use of black oxidised silver lends to the visual theme of the industrial. The ring shanks are the roots, bursting around and out to constructed crystal like forms as they try to reach the sky, trying to escape from its man made world. The very world that gave the pieces life.
