Merlin Klein

Schmuck 2015

Day 2

Merlin Klein

Klein’s work I felt exhibited  a sort of philosophical genius. Re-contextualising data he cremates materials given to him, rewriting their original meaning and value in the form of a piece of jewellery. For example, Klein purposefully grew and cut his hair with the intention of casting it has a new type of wearable. Mixing the object as ash into a clay-like mould his pieces harden and are articulated into a wearable item that Klein feels best resembles his client. Echoing what was and what is now, Klein’s work plays beautifully with time and space. Klein goes on to express in the accompaniment of his short film, that he feels liberated by his work. Like a pheonix burning through the ashes he finds solace in his art making practice and explains how history in a way has moulded who are and what we might become.
