Day1: Peter Bauhuis- Paras

Peter creates vessels by using the lost wax casting method. He dips plaster forms in wax to create the shape of these vase-like objects. The shapes are quite organic and from various angles they could be mistaken for the rear end curves of a woman. The aspect of these works that stood out for me were that he liked the randomness of error. He said that he would try things to see what happened and he didn't mind mistakes. He also liked to mix metals during the casting process and also adding to the vessels after they have been cast, by recasting on top. This resulted in wonderful melding of colours and beautiful contrasts, such as the bright white of the silver and the black tarnished unpolished sterling. His work with the vessels is relatively experimental, playful and exciting. This energy seemed to come through when Peter spoke about his work. He is humble and talented and has created many interesting pieces of jewellery as well as his objects.
I suppose I have connected with Peter and his work because I enjoy error in my work as it can at times provide interesting results and new tangents. I also like the idea of attempting things that are unconventional and that produce unknown outcomes. Kind of like presents  that you need to unwrap...
