Today we went to visit Pforzheim to see the Schmuckmuseum
before going on to stay at Idar-Oberstein. I was glad to see a large contemporary
installation work in the museum’s temporary exhibition space. Along the trip so
far I have heard many comments from students in early years of study exclaiming
when they see jewellers pushing the boundary of ‘jewellery making’. This has
been frustrating. There seems to still be very defined boarders between
disciplines in these students’ minds. They appear surprised when jewellers make
‘large’ “Sculptural” work. I find
this very limited understanding of what a ‘jewel’ is, or the issues that ‘jewellers’
“should” be investigating reflected
also in broader institutional structures of contemporary art. It is mirrored in
the contemporary art lectures I attend through my degree and it sometimes seems
as though anyone outside, indeed only a tiny step outside, the contemporary
jewellery scene is amazed, even rejecting of, jewellers stepping outside of a
brooch, necklace, ring or earrings. Urgh.
