Necklace: Salomon’s Garden, 2015
Fimo, silver, coral
Diana Dudek's work at the Wittenbrink Zeigt Schmuck Galerie required, for me personally, more then eyes to view the piece. The pieces seemingly soft body was nothing more then an illusion. My eyes could only see and understand so much. My sense of touch became very important to the discovery and understanding process as a viewer.
Upon inquiring about the texture of the pieces, Dudek herself insisted that I find out for myself, encouraging me to touch and experience the pieces. It was only from this interaction that I know first hand that the forms are hard. They are made from Fimo that protrude from a netted material to create the growing and oozing illusion. The works have an other worldly, alien like quality in their unrecognisable nature. It is not just the look that is alienating, but the way it was able to intrigue and cause me to question what I was seeing.
