Wednesday 11th March: Day One “On Location” Part 2

Leaving Schmuck
We made our way
Through the cold chilly air
Of a sky clouded grey.
Past pastel coloured buildings,
Next to a store selling shoes,
We entered the studio
Of Peter Bauhuis.
The inviting warmth
That came from inside
Was (to everyone I think)
A welcome respite.
Coats and bags
Were placed on a chair,
As Peter explained
There was dust everywhere.
See casting is something
That Peter enjoys -
Even taking the time
To mix his alloys.
From there he sets out
To create vessels and bowls,
Dipping clay into wax,
Pouring gold into moulds.
The metals he mixes
Creates an amazing contrast -
Whilst some silver turns black
And some silver will last.
This oxidization
Is something he seeks
As it gives his work character
And makes each piece unique.
He then proceeded
To show us some more,
Placing boxes on tables
And what they had in store
Were necklaces and brooches
That were hollow and light,
With intricate sprue-work
On the under-side.
One could see the resemblance
That these pieces held
To the pictures of mushrooms
On the walls and the shelves.
As Peter informed
He doesn’t start with design
But rather lets work take form
From the unconscious mind
And thus concludes
The second half of day one
But tomorrow we visit
Helen Britton.
